This Is My Name, and This Is My Dance/Sign Duration: 15 minutes Materials: none Purpose: To get to know each other and practice appropriate communication. Goals:
Youth will learn group members’ names.
Youth will create a sign/ symbol/ dance that the individual uses to represent themselves.
Procedure: Have youth stand in a circle facing the center. Instruct them to create a personal sign made up of a hand, foot or body motions, or any combination of both. Tell them to try to create a sign that represents their name or personality. For example, someone who likes to play baseball might mimic throwing or batting. The facilitator will pick a starting point in the circle. The person picked will say "My name is ______ and this is my dance," while demonstrating his or her dance. The group will reply in unison, "His/her name is _______ and this is his/her dance," and demonstrate that person's sign. The activity will continue until everyone in the circle has had an opportunity to sign.
