WHAT IS INCARCERATED YOUTH SPEAKING OUT FOR CHANGE?
IYSOC is a group of incarcerated youth from Memphis, Tenn., seeking solutions to prevent other young people from ending up in America's jails and prisons.
The group began in 2015 as a joint venture between the Shelby County Sheriff's Officeand BRIDGES, a Memphis-based non-profit committed to youth-led social change. IYSOC's members, all of whom are being tried adults, competed by way of essay writing, debates, and commitment to deep reflection to be selected for the first annual IYSOC cohort.
Through the organization, these youth are now determined to share their unique insights on the root causes of teen violence and the systemic changes that can make a difference for others in the future.
